“We Were Robbed, We Were Broken… But Now We Stand With Our Voices”
From Testimony to Dignity: Honouring Survivors Through Testimonial Therapy
As part of the Testimonial Therapy process, a survivor honour ceremony was organised to recognise the courage, dignity and resilience of people who have experienced violence and continue their journey towards justice.
The ceremony created a space where survivors were not seen only through the lens of their suffering, but were recognised, respected and honoured for their courage to speak, heal and stand with their voices.
For survivors, such recognition can be an important part of reclaiming dignity and rebuilding confidence—transforming testimony into strength, silence into voice, and suffering into a journey towards justice.

“We Were Robbed, We Were Broken… But Now We Stand With Our Voices”
A Mother’s Journey from Helplessness to Finding Her Voice and Dignity
Mani Kumari, approximately 42 years old, is a resident of Jhumri Telaiya, Koderma district, Jharkhand. She lives with her husband and two children. Like any mother, she had been saving jewellery and money for years for her daughter’s marriage and future.
After the Incident
On the night of 16 November 2025, at around 8:30 p.m., according to Mani Kumari’s account, three people—Mahesh Prasad Jaiswal (Home Guard), Shubham Bhagat and Vijay Saw—forcibly entered her home.
According to her account, she and her daughter were subjected to physical violence and abusive behaviour. When Mani Kumari tried to protect her daughter, she too was subjected to violence.
She further stated that the accused broke the CCTV camera installed in her home and took approximately ₹15 lakh worth of jewellery, ₹1 lakh in cash, important documents and her mobile phone.
She approached Telaiya Police Station to report the incident. According to her account, she felt humiliated and was repeatedly sent away without receiving the support she had hoped for from the local police and authorities.
After the incident, Mani Kumari and her family lived with deep fear and psychological distress. Her daughter’s laughter and normal behaviour were affected. Mani Kumari herself remained constantly afraid and began to feel that perhaps nobody would listen to her voice.
Finding Support
It was during this difficult period that Mani Kumari met Omkar Ji and learned about the support and assistance processes available through the organisation.
For the first time, a question began to emerge in her mind:
With the support of the organisation, she first received counselling. She was given a safe and respectful space where she could speak about what she had experienced in her own words.
Support was then provided to help move forward with the legal process in her case. She was also informed about her rights and the legal procedures available to her.
Mani Kumari also received Testimonial Therapy. Through this process, she was able to express her experiences and the pain associated with them in her own language.
For her, this was more than simply telling a story.
It helped her put words to her experience, recognise her own voice and begin to see herself beyond what had happened to her.
A Change in Confidence and Voice
With continued support from the organisation, Mani Kumari gradually began to regain confidence.
Where she had once felt frightened and helpless, she now feels more courage to speak about her experiences and move forward in defence of her rights.
She was also honoured within the community through an organisational programme. For Mani Kumari, this was an important experience.
It helped her feel that her identity was not limited to that of a woman who had suffered violence.
She could also stand in society with dignity, recognition and rights.
11 August 2026 – New Strength Through Survivor Alliance
On 11 August 2026, Mani Kumari participated in a Survivor Alliance programme.
There, she met other survivors who were sharing their experiences, raising their voices and moving forward with dignity.
Seeing other survivors speak openly about their experiences created a new sense of courage within her.
She realised:
“I am not alone.”
Meeting other survivors was emotionally significant for Mani Kumari. It gave her a sense of connection and renewed confidence that she did not have to carry her experience alone.
She could move forward with others who understood what it meant to survive, speak and seek justice.
A Journey of Change
Mani Kumari’s journey illustrates how appropriate psychosocial support, counselling, Testimonial Therapy, legal assistance, dignity and survivor-to-survivor connection can help a person affected by violence reconnect with their own voice.
Mani Kumari says:
“My voice can be heard. I am not alone, and I can continue my struggle for justice.”
Her story is not yet complete.
The process of seeking justice continues.
But she no longer feels as alone and helpless as she once did.
For Mani Kumari, perhaps the most important transformation is that she has rediscovered her voice.
She is no longer defined only by what happened to her.
She is a survivor who is speaking, connecting with others, asserting her dignity and continuing her journey towards justice.
“We were robbed.
– Survivor Alliance
Survivor
Survivor-to-Survivor
