On 31 July 2026 , I received a communication from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Case No. 16096/24/69/2025 , asking for my comments on the inquiry report submitted by the District Magistrate, Sonbhadra, regarding the tragic deaths caused by lightning in Sonbhadra and Bhadohi in July 2025. This development is significant because it demonstrates that citizen interventions and human rights complaints can help ensure that the rights of disaster victims are not overlooked.
