Gasht (गश्त): Campaign of Torture Survivors Against Torture

The People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), along with Jan Mitra Nyas, has initiated “Gasht (गश्त)” — a survivor-led campaign against torture, custodial violence, and human rights abuses.

For more than 30 years, PVCHR has worked with torture survivors and marginalized communities by providing:

  • Psychosocial counseling and rehabilitation
  • Legal aid and medical support
  • Community reintegration and livelihood assistance
  • Leadership development among survivors

“Gasht” seeks to empower survivors to become voices of justice, dignity, and democratic values while building awareness against custodial torture and unlawful detention.

Know Your Rights During Arrest, Custody & Interrogation

Brief Overview

Inspired by the landmark D.K. Basu Guidelines and incorporated into the BNSS 2023, this awareness campaign highlights the legal and human rights protections available during arrest and police custody.

Key Rights Include:

  • Right to inform family or relatives
  • Right to legal assistance
  • Mandatory arrest memo and identification of police personnel
  • Medical examination during custody
  • Protection against torture and inhuman treatment
  • Accountability for custodial violence

The campaign encourages citizens to stay informed, defend constitutional rights, and support a humane justice system rooted in dignity and non-violence.
