Contract Lineman’s Tragic Death: Family Receives Compensation, NHRC Petition Filed

A heartbreaking incident shook Varanasi when Manoj Prajapati, a 40-year-old contract lineman, lost his life after falling from an electric pole while repairing a high-tension line in Madauli, Varanasi. Despite being rushed for treatment, he tragically died on the way.

Manoj, a resident of Harpur Bhaironnath under Mirzamurad police station, was the sole breadwinner for his wife, son, and daughter. His sudden death has pushed the family into deep crisis.

Following public outrage and media pressure, the electricity department announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹10 lakhs to the bereaved family. However, this tragedy once again exposes the dire working conditions of contract linemen, who are often forced to work without adequate safety gear or training.

Recognizing this as a serious case of negligence and human rights violation, I, Lenin Raghuvanshi, on behalf of the People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), have filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The NHRC has registered the case under Diary Number 22870/IN/2025.

We demand:

  • Justice and long-term support for the victim’s family.

  • Accountability and action against negligent officials.

  • Mandatory safety measures and training for all linemen, especially contractual workers.

This tragic death must not be forgotten. It is a reminder that the dignity and safety of workers cannot be compromised in the name of cost-cutting and negligence.
