Tragic Story of Sanjay Singh: A Family Torn Apart by Police Brutality and Loss

Sanjay Singh, a 45-year-old man from Mehnaznagar, Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, was living a quiet life with his family, which included his two sons, Rudra Pratap (17) and Shaurya Pratap. Tragically, their world was turned upside down in December 2020 when police brutality and a series of heartbreaking events led to the untimely deaths of his son and his brother.

In November 2020, Sanjay received a call from Ghaziabad informing him that his brother, Kamla Singh, had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment. Sanjay quickly made his way to Ghaziabad to support his brother during this difficult time. Little did he know that his life was about to be torn apart by unimaginable tragedy.

On December 19, 2020, while Sanjay was away, his son Rudra Pratap was picked up by the police from a local field and taken to the police station. When Rudra failed to return home, panic set in. The family searched desperately for him, and on December 22, they learned from villagers that the police had taken him from the farm to the station.

Sanjay had just brought his ailing brother back to the village when he received troubling news from the police: his son was ill in jail. Sanjay rushed to the police station, only to be told to go to BHU (Banaras Hindu University) instead. There, he received the shocking news that his son had died. The young boy, who was only 17, had succumbed to police torture while in custody.

The loss of his son was devastating enough, but the shock didn't stop there. Upon hearing the news of Rudra's death, Sanjay’s brother, Kamla Singh, who was already weakened by his battle with cancer, passed away from the immense emotional shock.

The entire family was plunged into a state of utter devastation and shock. On one hand, Sanjay had to deal with the painful and unjust loss of his son, Rudra, due to police brutality. On the other hand, he lost his brother, Kamla, to the psychological trauma caused by the tragedy.

Intentional Infliction of Severe Mental or Physical Suffering

Physical Suffering: Rudra Pratap, the victim, suffered severe physical abuse at the hands of the police during his time in custody, which ultimately led to his death.

Mental Suffering: The psychological toll on Sanjay Singh and his family was profound. The loss of their son, followed by the death of Kamla Singh due to shock, created an overwhelming emotional burden for the family.

Who Was the Perpetrator?

The perpetrators of this heinous act were the police. They were directly responsible for the torture and subsequent death of Rudra Pratap. The police used physical violence and mental intimidation in their efforts to force Rudra into confessing to crimes he did not commit.

Purpose of the Torture

The torture was aimed at coercing Rudra into admitting guilt for charges that had been fabricated by the police. They sought to silence him and pressure him into making false confessions. Ultimately, the police used physical abuse to break his spirit, resulting in his tragic death.

Assistance Under the Project

This tragic case came to light after it was reported in the local media. The organization's case identification and referral process were triggered when the survivors reached out, seeking justice for the horrific treatment their loved ones had endured.

The story of Sanjay Singh and his family is a painful reminder of the devastating impact of police brutality, not only on the immediate victims but also on their families. It highlights the urgent need for accountability and reform within law enforcement to prevent such atrocities from happening again.
